Steve Mitchell - George Michael
Steve Mitchell was born on April 16, 1970, in Margate, Kent, into a vibrant and musically gifted family. His father was a professional pianist, his brother an accomplished violinist, and his mother and aunt both active members of local choral groups. From an early age, music shaped Steve’s world — “I remember us always being by a piano,” he fondly recalls.
In 1984, Steve discovered George Michael and was immediately captivated by his voice, songwriting, and stage presence. What began as hours spent singing along to George’s songs quickly turned into a lifelong passion. “To this day, my family is totally GEORGED out!” he jokes.
Steve’s professional journey as a vocalist spans several decades. He has performed with numerous bands across the UK and toured internationally, including an extended stint in Louisiana, USA. From high-energy cover bands to more intimate musical settings, Steve’s voice has consistently connected with audiences. But his deepest passion lies in performing the music of George Michael – songs he describes as “genuinely addictive” and emotionally resonant.
In 2021, Steve partnered with Dave West, the former bassist for Wham!, to create Celebrating George Michael, a live show honoring George’s iconic music. Through this production, Steve channels his admiration into powerful, heartfelt performances, sharing the timeless legacy of one of pop music’s greatest talents. “George Michael was an absolute legend – a master lyricist, producer, and performer,” Steve says.

Dave West - Bass
Dave “Westy” West is a seasoned British bassist whose early contributions to Wham! played a role in shaping the band’s signature sound. Emerging from the vibrant music scene of Watford and Bushey in the early 1980s, Dave was the bassist in the formative stages of Wham!’s conception.
Dave collaborated closely with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, contributing to the original demos of iconic tracks such as “Careless Whisper,” “Wham Rap!,” and “Club Tropicana.” Notably, during rehearsals, he crafted the distinctive slap bass intro for “Club Tropicana,” a feature that became emblematic of the song’s upbeat, tropical vibe.
Dave’s involvement also extended to the early ska-influenced group, The Executive, where Dave would lend George his bass guitarfor the band’s early performances.
Beyond his work with Wham!, Dave’s versatility as a bassist led him to collaborate with a diverse array of artists across various genres. George introduced Dave to Hazel O’Connor, with whom he became great friends and maintained a decade-long professional relationship. Dave also worked with Geri Halliwell, Bonnie Tyler, Boy George, Samantha Fox, and The Q-Tips among many others.
Dave’s musical influences are wide-ranging, drawing heavily from the rich soul and disco sounds of the 1970s and ’80s. He’s especially inspired by artists including Michael McDonald and legendary bassist Marcus Miller. A true lover of inventive and enduring bass lines, Dave finds particular joy in the groove-driven energy of classic disco tracks – admiring the creativity and staying power of the bass work that defines the genre.
Now the show’s producer, Dave was initially hesitant to return to the stage to perform the songs on which he originally worked, but he was inspired by Steve Mitchell’s authentic portrayal of George Michael and the show’s commitment to honouring the late singer’s legacy. Their collaboration not only rekindled Dave’s connection to the music that launched his career but also introduced his foundational contributions to new audiences.
