Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” released on December 3, 1984, has become a timeless holiday classic. Despite its initial release, the song didn’t secure the coveted UK Christmas number one spot, peaking at number two behind Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” However, its popularity endured, and in 2023, 39 years after its debut, “Last Christmas” finally achieved the Christmas number one position. This milestone was followed by another in 2024, when the song became the first to secure back-to-back Christmas number ones, coinciding with its 40th anniversary.

The song’s creation is a testament to George Michael’s songwriting prowess. Composed in his childhood bedroom, George’s inspiration struck during a visit to his parents’ home. He played the melody for Andrew (Ridgeley), who immediately recognised its potential as a Christmas classic. George’s meticulous production involved him playing every instrument on the track, capturing the festive spirit with elements like sleigh bells and some very Christmassy synth lines.

Over the years, “Last Christmas” has been covered by numerous artists, each adding their unique touch to the song. Notable versions include our own version in 2023, as well as those by Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Gwen Stefani, with Andrew expressing particular fondness for Stefani’s 2017 rendition. The song’s enduring appeal is evident in its consistent presence on Christmas holiday playlists and its influence on popular culture, inspiring films and being featured in various media.

The 40th anniversary of “Last Christmas” has been marked by several commemorative events and releases. A special anniversary EP was launched, featuring remastered versions of the original track alongside new content. Additionally, a documentary delving into the song’s history and impact was released, offering fans an intimate look at its creation and legacy. These celebrations underscore the song’s significance in the holiday music canon.

Andrew has reflected on the song’s legacy, noting that it has become “part of the fabric of Christmas.” He believes that George would have been “utterly delighted” by the song’s continued success and its resonance with new generations of listeners. Andrew attributes the song’s enduring popularity to its timeless quality and the universal themes of love and reflection that it encapsulates.

The journey of “Last Christmas” from a number two spot in 1984 to achieving consecutive Christmas number ones four decades later is a testament to its lasting appeal and the profound impact of George Michael’s artistry. As it continues to be a staple of holiday celebrations worldwide, “Last Christmas” exemplifies how music can transcend time, touching all of our hearts across different eras and solidifying its place in the annals of pop history.

Happy Christmas to you and all of your loved ones.
